Force measurement solutions for the automotive industry
Interface introduced our load cells to the automotive and vehicle industries more than five decades ago. Quality and precise sensor technologies are essential for the manufacturing and production of vehicles.
Interface's force gauges are used for critical testing in both commercial and industrial vehicle development and production to ensure safety and reliability in the automotive industry.
As the industry has evolved and changed, so have the products we deliver to our customers in this market. Our range of solutions is constantly expanding in functionality and capabilities as the complexity of testing increases throughout the process, from component design and prototyping to the rigorous safety testing of each individual device.
Areas of application for force measurement solutions
By developing highly sensitive, extremely precise and safe load cells and torque sensors, our products are used in all types of test and measurement applications including:
- Engine performance test benches
- Assembly of wheel nuts
- Testing airbag connections
- EV battery testing
- Torque testing of ICE and EV engines
- Equipment fatigue testing
- Engine test benches
- Brake and clutch pedal force
- Tightening engine head bolts
- Vehicle crash test walls
- Testing the suspension of racing cars
- Gears and gear mesh
- Autonomous vehicle testing
Research and development facilities with precision application requirements prefer our 1200 Series LowProfile™ load cells with their special torque compensated design. They are used on automobile manufacturers' assembly lines for a variety of production monitoring and testing applications. Our highly accurate LowProfile™ load cells are even used in NASCAR and IndyCar shops to test individual springs and entire vehicle suspensions.

Here are two highlights of the automotive application notes.
Tire testing

A leading tire manufacturer needed a solution for data analysis during load testing. The research aimed to improve the product by defining the tire's dynamic control capabilities. After consulting with our application engineers, it turned out that both torque and lateral force had to be measured during the tests.
Interface recommended the new AT105 non-contact force torque transducer. Due to the torque and shear force measurement requirements, it was determined that the best option to verify the results on the display and graphical representation is to connect the transducers to the 4-channel USB interface module SI-USB4.
MDPS exam

A manufacturer wanted to test power steering for its vehicles. He wanted to test the tension and compression of the linkage between the rack and pinion. On a test frame, Interface's 1200 Standard Precision LowProfile™ load cell was installed at the end of the rack drive. While the wheel is turning, the load cell checks the compression and tensile forces. The force measurements can be displayed in real time using the high-precision 9870 High-Speed High Performance TEDS Ready Indicator. The 1200 Standard Precision LowProfile load cell successfully measured the tensile and compressive forces between the rack and pinion of the customer's MDPS system.
