Understanding Dual-Shear Load Cells
In the industrial heavy-duty sectorWeighing and structural review Accurate measurement of enormous loads is only half the battle. Test engineers and plant operators must also consider thermal expansion, structural deflection, changing focus areas and circumvent off-axis lateral forces. Conventional single-sided supported bending beam sensors often reach their limits under these complex mechanical conditions.
This is precisely where dual-shear load cells come into play, often also referred to as double-sided shear beam load cells. They are designed to deliver reliable accuracy under the most demanding conditions and are considered the primary solution for high-capacity, multidirectional force environments.
What is a dual-shear load cell?
A dual-shear load cell is a strain gauge sensor supported at both ends, with the force acting directly in the center of the beam. Unlike cantilever beams with single-end clamping, which measure strain only from a fixed base, the dual-sided design distributes the force symmetrically across two matching shear elements. Strain gauges are bonded to the machined webs inside the beam and connected in a complete Wheatstone bridge circuit to convert mechanical shear stress into an electrical mV/V signal.
Because the shear strain along the web remains uniform regardless of minor displacements of the load application point, dual-shear load cells maintain high accuracy even if the mechanical suspension shifts slightly under load. The Interface Load Pins are an excellent example of this dual-shear design.

Dual-shear measuring pins (load pins)
The Interface Load-Pin series utilizes an internal dual-shear configuration , in which strain gauges are installed along the neutral axis in a central bore, supported at both ends and loaded in the middle.
LP stainless steel load cells are standard and custom-designed dual-shear load cells for clevises, sheaves, pulleys, and shackles. Capacities range from 1,1K lbf to over 3,3M lbf (500 kg to 1.500+ MT), with optional outputs of 4–20 mA, 0–5 V, 0–10 V, or RS-485.
WTSLP wireless stainless steel load pins combine dual-shear geometry with Interface WTS wireless telemetry for wireless force transmission over long distances (up to 600 m / 1.969 ft range) in lifting, marine, and heavy-duty applications. These custom sensors are available in force capacities from 1.000 to three million pounds.
The ILMP Standard Stainless Steel Load-Bearing Stud is a standardized configuration for the direct replacement of load-bearing pivot bolts and fittings in mechanical assemblies where weight and force need to be measured. Capacities range from 1,1 K lbf (0,5 MT) to 3.307 K lbf (1.500 MT) with integrated signal conditioning. A wireless version is also available: the ILPW Standard Wireless Load-Bearing Stud.
Dual-shear web geometry in low-profile load cells
Although it differs from a classic double-sided supported rectangular beam, Interface's flagship LowProfile series is mechanically derived from dual-shear beam physics. As described in detail in the Interface Load Cell Field Guide , the pancake-shaped measuring flange design operates according to a radial dual-shear web layout.
The LowProfile cross-section shows how eight holes are drilled through the measuring flange, creating eight shear ribs from the material between the holes. This illustrates how the radial shear ribs, together with the central hub and the outer edges on both sides, resemble two shear beam cells end-to-end. The LowProfile® cell thus demonstrates the stability of a double-sided shear beam, and since the circular design corresponds to four double-sided cells, it provides stability in eight directions around the center point.
It functions symmetrically like multiple double-sided shear beams radiating from a central load point to a fixed circular base ring, thus providing 8-directional resistance to external shear forces and moments while isolating the pure axial force. The LowProfile series, Interface's most popular and widely used high-precision load cell range, includes:
- 1200 Standard Precision Universal LowProfile Load Cell and 1201 Pressure-Only Standard Precision Low Profile Load Cell
- 1000 High-capacity, durable, universal low-profile load cells
- 1100 Ultra-Precision Universal Low-Profile Load Cell
- 1500 Low-capacity universal low-profile load cell
Five technical advantages of dual-shear load cells
#1 – Centrally loaded symmetry distributes the load evenly across two bearing points, thereby reducing local stress concentrations and mechanical fatigue.
#2 – Shear force suppression resists off-axial, torsional and transverse forces without causing significant measurement errors.
#3 – Tolerance to thermal expansion through end-side mounting fittings that compensate for slight lateral movements when large structures expand and contract due to ambient temperature fluctuations.
#4 – LowProfile models can be easily integrated into machines and structures, such as directly under containers, vehicle scales and structural platforms, without requiring excessive vertical installation space.
#5 – Environmental tightness: manufactured from high-quality alloy or stainless steel with optional hermetic sealing (IP67/IP68/IP69K) to withstand harsh washing conditions, outdoor use and industrial environments.
Core applications benefit from dual-shear load cells
Dual-shear load cells are particularly effective for capacity requirements ranging from a few thousand pounds to over 100.000+ lbf. A double-sided shear beam load cell operates purely on shear. The strain gauges detect the primary shear strain at vertical webs between the central load point and each of the two bearing ends. These applications especially benefit from this load cell design, which is specifically engineered to tolerate high external transverse forces as well as the thermal expansion and contraction of large supported structures.
Aerospace and structural test rigs – multi-point load frames for structural testing utilize dual-shear beams to isolate purely vertical compressive or tensile forces across distributed aircraft airframes – and rail test rigs.
Tank, silo, and hopper weighing – Thermal expansion of containers, wind loads, and material displacements generate continuous lateral forces. Dual-shear assemblies absorb mechanical movements while simultaneously ensuring reliable, real-time inventory tracking.
Vehicle scales and axle load scales – Heavy vehicles generate massive impact and braking forces when driving onto the platforms. Dual-shear designs effortlessly handle repeated high-tonnage cycles and lateral loads. Read more about this: Load cells maximize axle load scale performance
Monitoring of rigging, crane and winch – indispensable for safety checks, overload protection and load distribution in lifting and tensioning devices.
Optimize your measuring system with dual-shear load cells
A reliable sensor requires a properly matched signal chain to deliver optimal results. Combine sensors with self-aligning mounting assemblies and hardened probes or rocker-type interfaces to minimize jamming and ensure pure vertical load transmission. Connect the sensors to multi-channel distribution boxes, digital displays, or fast data acquisition modules such as the BX8 interface or the digital instrumentation family for clean, low-noise signal processing. Request complete system calibrations of the sensor, cabling, and instrumentation together to ensure repeatability and measurement reliability in the field.
